چکیده

Introduction In November 2006, a diverse group of telomere researchers gathered in Madrid to celebrate two high-profile recognitions. First, the 2003 Josef Steiner Cancer Research award to Maria Blasco allowed her to organize this Cancer Conference with the help of Jerry Shay. Blasco was honoured for her contributions to our understanding of the connections between telomere function and cancer development. This task was made possible by the discovery of telo merase—the ribonucleoprotein enzyme that extends the telomere repeat tracts that comprise the terminal DNA sequences of each chromosome. Second, it was for this crucial discovery that Elizabeth Blackburn, Jack Szostak

The effect of high intensity interval training on telomere length and telomerase activity in non-athlete young men

Introduction: Telomeres are DNA portions that are located on the two ends of the chromosome. Telomeres play an important role in cellular life. Exercise is one of the factors that contributes to their control. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of 8 weeks of high intensity interval training (HIIT) on telomere length and telomerase activity in non-athletic young men. ...

P-86: Evaluation of Telomere Length, Telomerase and Telomeric Repeat Containing RNA (TERRA) Expression Levels in Cumulus Cells of PCOS Patients

Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the reasons of infertility in women with chronic anovulation. Ovulation process is tightly regulated by molecular mechanisms controlling proliferation/differentiation of cells. Telomeres, TTAGGG tandem repeats, are transcribed into a non coding RNA, named TERRA. Recent studies suggest that TERRA sustain several important functions at chromos...

Tumorogensis : The Dual Role of Telomerase

Carcinogenesis is a multistep process characterized by the gradual accumulation of genetic changes that ultimately lead to cancer. These genetic mutations can impart limitless replicative potential to the cancer cells making them immortal. Telomeres are repeat nucleotide sequence TTAGGG that are present at the end of chromosomes. Its functions are to protect the chromosomal ends and to ensur...

Meeting report: the role of telomeres and telomerase in cancer.

The role of telomeres and telomerase in cancer is an area of much recent interest. This conference sponsored by the American Association of Cancer Research provided a timely opportunity to bring together basic and clinical scientists interested in the field of telomeres and telomerase cancer biology. The meeting included over 250 attendees with 150 oral and poster presentations focused on under...

Telomeres and telomerase.

Telomeres are in the spotlight of modern biology. Whether the subject at hand is cancer, gene regulation, organismal aging, or the cloning of mammals, much seems to depend on what happens at the ends of chromosomes. Because glamorous hypotheses often persist without experimental support, it is important to ask ourselves what we really know about telomeres. This was the topic of a recent meeting...
